THE JOURNEY TO GETTING STARTED
What to Expect
So you are interested in starting the gym. Let us take you through the journey from enquiring to starting your first session. At Barnes Active we want you to feel prepared and relaxed knowing each stage of the process, from what a show around is to what to wear when you start.
If you are interested in what we do at Barnes Active, we have a video explaining the journey from enquiring, to if you decide to sign up. Visit our SEND page for information about specialist sessions, fitness games and activities we can offer.
THINGS TO KNOW IF YOU ARE NEW TO BARNES ACTIVE
-
When you contact us interested in signing up for gym sessions we will invite you for a show around. Here you will meet a coach and get to see the gym. You can ask all your questions and discuss what you are looking for in a gym session. When you leave there is no pressure to sign up as it is important to have a think about whether we are the right fit for you.
If you decide you would like to become one of our members we will find a training time best suited to you and let you know who your coach will be. We will send you some forms to fill out. Your new coach will programme you a session tailored to your needs and abilities.
In your first session, we will ease you into a workout, as we get to know your strengths and abilities and you get to grips with the equipment and exercises.
If you are joining our group sessions we will introduce you to the other members of the group before the session starts. During the class, we will take the time to personally explain all the exercises to you so you do not feel lost or overwhelmed. The programmes for our group sessions can be adapted to all abilities, so you never need to feel like you can’t give something a go.
If you are bringing a minor or someone who needs a carer we ask for a guardian to wait in the reception until the session is over. Depending on the member’s needs we may ask for the guardian to join us in the main gym to offer support.
-
Dress in comfortable clothes you can move around in such as a T-shirt, leggings, jogging bottoms or shorts. In winter bring layers to wear, which may include a hat and gloves with a good grip. Wear a pair of sensible trainers you can do a variety of exercises in.
Bring a water bottle as it is important to stay hydrated when working out.

Our gym is situated at the end of a quiet country road in Stagsden, Bedfordshire.
If you are coming from the direction of Bedford take the first turning into Stagsden. As you come into the village you will see a turning for Wick End.
If you are coming from the direction of Milton Keynes then you can access Stagsden from the other end and drive through the village before you turn down Wick End.
We are located at the end of Wick End, past the farm. You will see a collection of metal industrial units. Our gym is the first unit as you turn into the second turning for Kinsbourne Farm.
-
There is plenty of parking on site. You can either park in one of the many spaces opposite the main gym door, or if you come through the first entrance then you can park in one of the spaces near our side shutter.
None of the spaces are designated for the different businesses, so there is no need to worry about which space you choose.
-
The gym has a toilet which is disability friendly.
There is a comfortable reception area where guests can sit if they are early for their session or are a parent/carer waiting for someone partaking in a session.
We have a kitchen where you can fill up your bottle or make a cup of tea or coffee before/after your session or if you are a parent or carer waiting in the reception.
-
We are a dog-friendly gym and are happy for you to bring your four-legged friend with you to hang out in the reception during your session—as long as they are well-behaved and house-trained.
We have a friendly gym dog called Izzy who spends her time in the lobby chilling out on the sofa. She loves to greet our members and snuggle up to the parents waiting whilst their children do sessions. If you are someone who does not like dogs, let us know and we will put her in the office where she will happily sleep during your time in the gym.
For those who find animals a comfort to their mental health, when appropriate we occasionally programme a short dog walk into the warmup of their session to help them ease into exercising.
THE COACHES
We have a friendly team of coaches who are looking forward to meeting you. Find out more about us here.
IZZY
Izzy is our gym dog. She likes to greet our members with a tail wag and loves being stroked. For those who do not like dogs, she will happily sleep in the office during your session.
THE GYM
When entering Kinsbourne Farm, you will see our gym as you drive in.
